English Garden Munich

À propos de cette destination

The English Garden represents Munich's green lung and one of the world's most impressive urban parks, covering 370 hectares with 5.5 kilometers of parkland connecting the Isar River to Munich's city center. Created in 1789 by Sir Benjamin Thompson (Count Rumford) for Prince Charles Theodore, this landscape park follows the informal English garden style popularized in 18th-century England.\n\nThe park's most iconic landmark is the Chinese Tower (Chinesischer Turm), a 25-meter wooden pagoda modeled after Kew Gardens' Great Pagoda. Rebuilt after WWII bombing, it anchors one of Munich's most famous beer gardens with 7,000 seats, attracting locals and international visitors who gather under ancient chestnut trees for traditional Bavarian refreshment.\n\nThe Eisbach stream creates one of urban parks' most unique attractions: city center river surfing. The artificial Isar branch produces a standing wave near Haus der Kunst where experienced surfers demonstrate their skills year-round, creating a spectacular sight in the heart of Munich. The cold, crystal-clear water also provides cooling relief during summer months.\n\nThe Monopteros, an elegant neoclassical temple with Corinthian columns, offers panoramic views across the park and serves as a popular gathering spot. Nearby Kleinhesseloher See covers 86,410 square meters with three islands and provides boat rentals, lakeside dining at Seehaus restaurant, and peaceful waterfront walks.\n\nThe Japanese Tea House, gifted by Munich's Japanese community for the 1972 Olympics, hosts traditional tea ceremonies and the annual Japan Festival each July. This cultural bridge reflects the park's international character and Munich's global connections.\n\nRecreational opportunities span 78 kilometers of paths for cycling and jogging, extensive lawns for volleyball, badminton, frisbee, and soccer, plus designated areas for slacklining and outdoor fitness. The park accommodates both active pursuits and contemplative relaxation, with secluded groves and meadows offering urban escape.\n\nSeasonal events include the historic Kocherlball dance at dawn, Christmas markets at the Chinese Tower, and numerous cultural festivals throughout the year. Traditional Bavarian costume events maintain connections to Munich's heritage while contemporary activities reflect modern urban park usage.\n\nFour beer gardens within the park boundaries provide authentic Bavarian experiences: the famous Chinese Tower location, upscale Seehaus by the lake, northern Aumeister, and family-friendly Hirschau, each offering unique atmospheres within the same natural setting.
